Derbyshire Oakstone & Whitby Jet
Derbyshire Oakstone is a rare pseudostalactitic banded variety of crystalline barite. The banding is often structured around a central core and occurs in various shades of browns and creams giving the appearance of polished oak when sectioned hence the name Oakstone. It is often mistaken for petrified wood and has been used for decorative inlay work in the past but seldom in the production of jewellery. Oakstone is only found in the area around the Arbor Low, the finest Stone Age ‘henge’ monument in northern England where 50 huge stones lie in a circle. On a mystical theme the site is said to have a plethora of ley lines running through it which some believe impart great powers to the Oakstone.
