Turquoise & Whitby Jet
This highly prized semi-precious stone forms as a porous blue aggregate as the result of the weathering of aluminium-rich igneous rocks. It usually takes the form of nodules or veins within the host rock in arid regions. The blue colour varies from the highly prized sky-blue through to greenish grey. Turquoise was a favourite stone of many early civilisations. Mining has been carried out in Egypt since 3000 BC and the ancient Aztecs and Incas used turquoise for ornaments and artefacts which came from mines in New Mexico. In this country turquoise can be found in Cornwall, however the worlds best quality turquoise is mined from the Sleeping Beauty Mine in Arizona.
